Whey protein hydrolysate appears in foods, infant formula, sports nutrition, and specialized clinical nutrition. Its production can reduce viscosity and improve heat stability compared with intact whey protein. Bitterness is common because short hydrophobic peptides can activate bitter taste receptors. The ingredient is not the same as free amino acids; it remains a mixture of peptides of different lengths. Composition varies by supplier, enzyme, and process, so two hydrolysates with the same protein content may behave differently in a formulation.
Whey protein hydrolysate is a dairy ingredient made by treating whey protein with enzymes or, less often, acid or heat to break peptide bonds. The starting material is typically sweet whey or acid whey from cheese making, first concentrated and dried into whey protein concentrate or isolate. Hydrolysis shortens long protein chains into smaller peptides, changing functional properties such as solubility, viscosity, and foam formation. The resulting powder contains peptides, residual intact protein, moisture, minerals, and variable amounts of lactose and fat depending on the starting material.
Enzymatic hydrolysis usually uses proteases from microbial, plant, or animal sources. The enzyme choice, pH, temperature, and reaction time determine which peptide bonds are cleaved and the final peptide profile. After hydrolysis, the enzyme is inactivated by heat, and the mixture is clarified, filtered, concentrated, and spray-dried. Manufacturers may use ultrafiltration to remove larger peptides or minerals. The degree of hydrolysis, often reported as a percentage, describes the proportion of peptide bonds broken. A higher degree generally means shorter peptides, but it does not by itself define taste, allergenicity, or biological activity.
Advanced peptide profiling uses liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry to identify fragments and assess batch consistency. Amino acid analysis after acid hydrolysis quantifies the building blocks and can reveal deviations from expected composition. Residual enzyme activity may be monitored in products where active enzymes are undesirable. Allergen tests often use immunoassays for beta-lactoglobulin, but hydrolysis can reduce or alter epitope recognition, so negative results do not prove absence of allergenic potential. Physical tests include particle size, bulk density, and reconstitution behavior.
Regulatory and labeling frameworks vary by country. In the United States, whey protein hydrolysate may be regulated as a food ingredient or a dietary supplement ingredient depending on intended use. In the European Union, it falls under general food law, with additional rules for infant formula and foods for special medical purposes. A claim of hypoallergenicity is not established by hydrolysis alone and generally requires clinical evidence. Open questions remain about how degree of hydrolysis relates to bitterness, nitrogen absorption, and residual allergenicity across different products and processing methods.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Off-white to cream powder | Color can vary with starting whey and drying conditions |
| Protein content | Typically 70-90% dry basis | Depends on whether concentrate or isolate is used |
| Degree of hydrolysis | Often 5-30% for commercial hydrolysates | Ranges vary by intended application and process |
| Solubility | High in water at neutral pH | Smaller peptides generally dissolve more readily than intact protein |
| Common synonyms | Hydrolyzed whey protein; whey peptide | Terms are not always standardized across suppliers |
Composition tables often report protein content on a dry basis, ash, moisture, fat, and lactose. Because hydrolysis adds water to peptide bonds, the total mass yield can appear slightly higher than the original protein if residual salts and water are counted. Some products are further processed by ultrafiltration, spray drying, or decolorization, which alters mineral content and flavor. Product labels may distinguish partially hydrolyzed from extensively hydrolyzed whey, but these terms are not always defined by a single numerical threshold across regions.
Whey protein hydrolysate is a dairy ingredient made by treating whey protein with proteases that cleave peptide bonds. The starting material is typically whey protein concentrate or isolate, which contains beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, and smaller amounts of bovine serum albumin and immunoglobulins. Hydrolysis shortens protein chains into peptides and free amino acids, changing solubility, viscosity, and flavor compared with intact whey protein. The extent of cleavage is commonly described by degree of hydrolysis, a percentage of broken peptide bonds relative to total bonds.
Routine quality control for hydrolysate powders includes total nitrogen or protein content by Kjeldahl or Dumas combustion, moisture by oven or Karl Fischer titration, ash, and mineral profiles. Microbiological tests typically cover total aerobic counts, yeasts, molds, and specified pathogens according to regional food safety rules. Amino acid analysis can quantify free amino acids and peptide-bound residues after hydrolysis. For products intended for special populations, additional tests may target residual lactose, fat, or specific allergenic proteins. Specifications are set by the manufacturer and may exceed general food-grade requirements.
Hydrolysate powders are hygroscopic and can absorb moisture during storage, which may promote caking, browning, and loss of solubility. Cool, dry conditions and sealed packaging slow these changes, while high humidity and warm temperatures accelerate Maillard reactions between peptides and residual sugars. Liquid hydrolysates are more perishable and often require refrigeration or preservatives. Shelf-life studies usually monitor moisture, color, solubility, free amino groups, and microbial load over time. Stability depends on residual lactose, water activity, packaging barrier properties, and the initial peptide profile.
Historically, American black bears occupied the majority of North America's forested regions. Today, they are primarily limited to sparsely settled, forested areas. American black bears currently inhabit much of their original Canadian range, though they seldom occur in the southern farmlands of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; they have been extirpated on Prince Edward Island since 1937. Surveys taken in the mid-1990s found the Canadian black bear population to be between 396,000 and 476,000 in seven provinces; this estimate excludes populations in New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. All provinces indicated stable populations of American black bears over the 2000s. The current range in the United States is constant throughout most of the Northeast and within the Appalachian Mountains almost continuously from Maine to northern Georgia, the northern Midwest, the Rocky Mountain region, the West Coast and Alaska. However, it becomes increasingly fragmented or absent in other regions. Despite this, American black bears in those areas seem to have expanded their range in recent decades, such as with sightings in Ohio, Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Nebraska. Sightings of itinerant black bears in the Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and southwestern Wisconsin are common.
The neuromedin U receptors are two G-protein coupled receptors which bind the neuropeptide hormones neuromedin U and neuromedin S. There are two subtypes of the neuromedin U receptor, each encoded by a separate gene (NMUR1, NMUR2).
=== Biological characteristics === Like other aptamers, L-RNA aptamers are able to bind molecules such as peptides, proteins, and substances of low molecular weight. The affinity of L-RNA aptamers to their target molecules often lies in the pico to nanomolar range and is thus comparable to antibodies. L-RNA aptamers themselves have low antigenicity. In contrast to other aptamers, L-RNA aptamers have high stability in blood serum, since they are less susceptible to be cleaved hydrolytically by enzymes. They are excreted by the kidneys in a short time due to their low molar mass (which is below the renal threshold). L-RNA aptamers modified with a higher molar mass, such as PEGylated L-RNA aptamers, show a prolonged plasma half-life.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two received an average score of 90.68% based on 22 reviews on the review aggregator GameRankings. On Metacritic, it has an average score of 90 out of 100 based on 21 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". He argued that wounds should be cleaned and sealed up promptly. This was a radical idea; normally this would have been inviting gas gangrene, but Florey proposed leaving that to the penicillin. His recommendations were acted upon, and the War Office established a training course for pathologists and clinicians at the Royal Herbert Hospital, which made use of film that Florey shot in North Africa. Although he intended that penicillin be used to treat the seriously wounded, there were large numbers of venereal disease cases, against which penicillin was particularly effective, and from a military point of view being able to cure gonorrhea in 48 hours was a breakthrough. The supply situation improved, and 20 million units per day were made available for the Allied invasion of Italy in September. Two out of three gas gangrene casualties now survived.
Depending on the column size, CIM monolithic columns are primarily used for the purification or analysis of large biomolecules which are being used for cancer gene therapy, treatment of viral infectious diseases and treatment of genetic diseases. Some types of molecules that can be successfully purified using CIM columns are pDNA, IgM, inter-alpha inhibitors, virus like particles, and diverse viruses; adenoviruses, bacteriophages, feline calicivirus, hepatitis A, lentivirus, influenza A and B, rabies virus, rotavirus, tomato and pepino mosaic virus. Since 2004, BIA Separations has organized and hosted the Monolith Summer School and Symposium (MSS) which takes place every 2 years. MSS was established as there were no dedicated conferences to this technology and to bring together the top international scientists and researchers in the area of monolith chromatography to share their experiences and innovative applications. For fission of uranium-235, the predominant radioactive fission products include isotopes of iodine, caesium, strontium, xenon and barium. The threat becomes smaller with the passage of time. Locations where radiation fields once posed immediate mortal threats, such as much of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on day one of the accident and the ground zero sites of U.S. atomic bombings in Japan (6 hours after detonation) are now relatively safe because the radioactivity has decreased to a low level. Many of the fission products decay through very short-lived isotopes to form stable isotopes, but a considerable number of the radioisotopes have half-lives longer than a day. The radioactivity in the fission product mixture is initially mostly caused by short lived isotopes such as 131I and 140Ba; after about four months 141Ce, 95Zr/95Nb and 89Sr take the largest share, while after about two or three years the largest share is taken by 144Ce/144Pr, 106Ru/106Rh and 147Pm. Later 90Sr and 137Cs are the main radioisotopes, being succeeded by 99Tc. In the case of a release of radioactivity from a power reactor or used fuel, only some elements are released; as a result, the isotopic signature of the radioactivity is very different from an open air nuclear detonation, where all the fission products are dispersed.

Respect the dignity of individual people Connect with other people sincerely, openly, and inclusively Care for the wellbeing of everyone Protect social values, justice, and the public interest Other developments in ethical frameworks include those decided upon during the Asilomar Conference, the Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI, and the IEEE's Ethics of Autonomous Systems initiative, among others; however, these principles are not without criticism, especially regarding the people chosen to contribute to these frameworks. Promotion of the wellbeing of the people and communities that these technologies affect requires consideration of the social and ethical implications at all stages of AI system design, development and implementation, and collaboration between job roles such as data scientists, product managers, data engineers, domain experts, and delivery managers. The UK AI Safety Institute released in 2024 a testing toolset called 'Inspect' for AI safety evaluations available under an MIT open-source licence which is freely available on GitHub and can be improved with third-party packages. It can be used to evaluate AI models in a range of areas including core knowledge, ability to reason, and autonomous capabilities.
=== DC Universe === Mogo appears in DC Rebirth and the post-Rebirth DC Universe as the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps. During the "Prism of Time" and "Fracture" story arcs of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, Mogo also serves as the base of the Sinestro Corps under Soranik Natu's leadership. At one point, Hank Henshaw hacked into the Green Lantern Power Battery, corrupting Mogo's landscape. Following Henshaw's defeat, Ganthet reveals the Guardians are secretly rebuilding Oa and intend to return the Green Lanterns' main base of operations there to allow for Mogo to recover.
After being absorbed in the small intestine, iron travels through blood, bound to transferrin, and eventually ends up in the bone marrow, where it is involved in red blood cell formation. When red blood cells are degraded, the iron is recycled by the body and stored. When the amount of iron needed by the body exceeds the amount of iron that is readily available, the body can use iron stores (ferritin) for a period of time, and red blood cell formation continues normally. However, as these stores continue to be used, iron is eventually depleted to the point that red blood cell formation is abnormal. Ultimately, anemia ensues, which by definition is a hemoglobin lab value below normal limits.
It also scared NASA planners, as it took them several days to figure out that it was only an automated flight, not piloted, because voice recordings were transmitted from the craft en route to the Moon. On November 10, 1968, another automated test flight, Zond 6, was launched. It encountered difficulties in Earth reentry, and depressurized and deployed its parachute too early, causing it to crash-land only 16 kilometers (9.9 mi) from where it had been launched six days earlier. It turned out there was no chance of a piloted Soviet circumlunar flight during 1968, due to the unreliability of the Zonds. On December 21, 1968, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders became the first humans to ride the Saturn V rocket into space, on Apollo 8. They also became the first to leave low-Earth orbit and go to another celestial body, entering lunar orbit on December 24. They made ten orbits in twenty hours, and transmitted one of the most watched TV broadcasts in history, with their Christmas Eve program from lunar orbit, which concluded with a reading from the biblical Book of Genesis. Two and a half hours after the broadcast, they fired their engine to perform the first trans-Earth injection to leave lunar orbit and return to the Earth. Apollo 8 safely landed in the Pacific Ocean on December 27, in NASA's first dawn splashdown and recovery. The American Lunar Module was finally ready for a successful piloted test flight in low Earth orbit on Apollo 9 in March 1969.

It is whey protein that has been partially broken down into smaller peptides through hydrolysis. The powder still contains a mixture of peptides, residual protein, minerals, and other whey components. It is used as a food ingredient rather than a single pure compound.
Proteases cleave peptide bonds, reducing molecular size and altering solubility, viscosity, and taste. The extent of change depends on the enzyme and reaction conditions. Hydrolysis does not remove all intact protein or guarantee a specific peptide profile.
Degree of hydrolysis is the percentage of peptide bonds cleaved during the reaction. It is a processing measure, not a direct measure of peptide size distribution or function. Two products with the same degree can still differ in peptide sequence and sensory properties.
It is often estimated by TNBS, OPA, or pH-stat methods that quantify free amino groups or released protons. Values depend on assay conditions, protein standard, and calculation method. No single universal protocol exists for all products.
